ICT Letter Sent to all STC Chiefs and Training Managers
6 November, 2013
RE: Ethical Decision Making & Risk Management
Approximately 50% of government employees witnessed unethical conduct last year and failed to report it. When asked why, they advised that they either feared speaking up due to potential retaliation or they believed it would not make a difference. We know this phenomenon as “the code of silence” or the “don’t rat code”. Conversely, studies show that effective training can reduce unethical conduct and reduce sanctions and fines by as much as 95%*.
At Island Consulting and Training (ICT), we take ethics and risk management to the next level of professional training. We don’t tell officers what to think. Rather, we teach them how to think through ethical problems and situations. Furthermore, we teach them how to do so under stress and introduce them to a risk management perspective which correlates directly with prevention and proactively identifying high risk situations.
We know that the majority of high risk situations faced by officers cannot be found in manuals. Because of this fact, ICT’s approach to ethics is completely different than that of other training providers. After receiving graduate Level Ethical Decision Making teaching courses, we boiled it down and created dynamic, interactive and memorable training courses that are STC certified. Furthermore, our training provides command staff and training managers with powerful “good- faith” defenses against potential litigation and is based on direct experience working in the field and institutional settings.
We recommend that all staff attend this customized, targeted training designed to meet the specific needs and concerns of corrections professionals. To that end, we will provide a fourth day of Ethical Decision Making and Risk Management training at no cost, after travel expenses, after you schedule three consecutive days of Ethics training prior to December 31, 2014**.
Please feel free to contact us directly with any questions you may have. We look forward to hearing from you.
