Elevating Report Writing: Advanced Techniques for Probation Staff

    Course Summary: This highly interactive course will provide strategies and techniques to elevate the quality of the reports participants are writing. Going beyond the basics this course focuses on creating logical, persuasive, and objective reports. Participants will gain practice identifying and presenting important information, summarizing large amounts of information quickly, and choosing language and syntax that improve the professionalism in a report. Through an evidence-based approach and practical exercises, attendees will gain tools and strategies to strengthen their report writing.

    Performance Objectives: At the end of the course, participants will be able to:

      1. List three legal, procedural, or ethical considerations that impact
        the report commonly written by probation staff.
      2. List two strategies to improve the effectiveness of proofreading.
      3. List three things that are part of evidence-based writing.
      4. List two ways to mitigate bias and/or avoid making assumptions when
        writing reports.
      5. Define active voice and passive voice.
      6. Define objective and subjective.
