    Course Summary: This course will equip participants with essential knowledge and tools to engage respectfully and effectively with Indigenous clients, colleagues, and communities. Participants will learn about respectful language and terminology, gain an overview of local tribes and nations, and explore the historical context and enduring impacts of events such as Indian boarding schools and inter-generational trauma including substance use disorders. Current events affecting Indigenous groups locally and nationally will be discussed and students will learn about the contemporary presence and contributions of Indigenous peoples. At the end of this interactive course participants will have a stronger Indigenous cultural awareness.

    Performance Objectives: At the end of the course, participants will be able to:

      1. Name the Indigenous group local to your area.
      2. List two important historical Indigenous events.
      3. Define intergenerational trauma.
      4. List two local resources appropriate for Indigenous clients.
